The "best" look is a fitted one which requires cutting the frame tangsOriginally Posted by dispatch55126
(.250 radius is the best choice for RIA's tangs)
With attention to blending details, it will look better than 90% of the production 1911s on the market
The only beavetail (BT) I'm aware of that will drop-in* on your Rock and look "sorta-kinda OK" with a little blending on the underside below the tangs, is Wilson Combat pr #429BG
*drop-in meaning you don't have to cut the frame tangs.
Minor fitting will most likely be needed at the trigger bow engagement area
you'll have to be the judge if it "looks right" to you
these Rocks have Wilson drop-ins and bobbed stock hammers
if you have the wherewithal and/or aptitude and a few tools , it's really not tremendously difficult to fit your own BT .
The BT jig makes tangs cuts "almost" goof proof .
Once that's done and engagement arm fitted, it's pretty much file/blending and finish sanding for a "best" cosmetic fit
here's a little of what's involved to see if you have the inclination and/or aptitude to fit one yourself
jig in place, rough cut (and ONLY rough cut) w/Dremel
Files the rest of the way .
I use Dychem on the jig , as it helps to prevent monkeying up the jig and keep things square/true while filing
frame tang radius finsihed, BT fitted for proper engagement.
Now time for blending the underside at these points
doing my best to make it "perfect" by filing/sanding any/all hi-low spots the arrows point to
Lots and lots of finish sanding
Obviously the cost is more for a fitted one.(cause you need to buy the jig)
and time involved is substantial .
Cost will be substantial if a 'smith fitted it
so only you can decide if the Wilson drop-in looks "good enough" over a fitted one .
I can tell you though, the Wilson drop-in, while not the "best" cosmetic fit , WILL make a substantial difference in shooting comfort ...cause RIA's GI safety is VERY hard on the web of your hand ..even AFTER you de-horn the edges it's still uncomfortable for anything over 50 rnds sessions ...to "me" anyway
