Regarding the spring, IIRC Colt was at one time shipping its Gold Cup pistols with a second spring, rated for 'powder puff' target loads. It was 12lbs.
If it were my gun, I'd probably go for 14lbs. That's still not too light for the occasional standard-pressure load. There's even an argument that 14lbs IS the original standard spring rate... but that's another matter.
Springs aren't too expensive. Wolff sell 'spring calibration packs', with springs of varying weights. Maybe that could prove useful.
Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.
