I was totally new not that long ago. Fortunately for me, I had a bit of experience shooting at static targets at a couple of ranges. I knew that I enjoyed shooting but this style bored me after a short while. Later, I tried more structured Bullseye shooting and once again found it was not for me. Bullseye is very deliberate and slow which doesn't match my somewhat manic personality. A short time later, I found my comfort and interest by joining an IPSC club. With its fast pace and action, IPSC is still my favoured game and I compete once in a while but not seriously. I've also tried IDPA and do shoot Steel Challenge regularly. I shot one competition in IDPA and would likely get more involved but I prefer Steel Challenge at this point.

All this is to say that there are a lot of choices. I suggest that you find a club that has divisions or leagues in several of the action games as well as Bullseye. Each of the competitive choices will improve your skills but they are different and one or more may suit you best.
