Nice review! And it couldn't possibly be more timely! We had a short outage last night, and my 2-cell Maglite got some use... this seems like a worthwhile idea.

Very good review, my upgrades came from Battery Junction, they also have conversions for the very popular AA Maglite and have 'Specials' frequently.

Thanks for this entry. If you hadn't told me that such was available, I wouldn't have known. I'm going to upgrade my "torches" as well. I love this place!

Awesome stuff, but it appears there may be issues with the 3 watt and 2 D cell units judging from the review? I have a 4 D cell maglite, and a 2 D cell maglite, would love the 3 watt for each...

Anyone successfully use the 3 watt in a 2D cell maglite?

I believe the review noted that there are two models of the 3-watt LED. One is for 2-cell and 3-cell Maglites, the other is for 4-cell and 5-cell Maglites. Or maybe I saw that on the web site of one of the places selling them.

I've owned two Mini-Maglites for about 15 years. Two years ago, while tracking deer blood trails in the woods after dusk, I saw how bright my brother in laws LED flashlight was. I purchased a 2 D-cell ML LED soon after. It was about $30-32 dollars. It's almost like daylight, and the blood drops stand out much better under the LED than with the conventional bulbs. When the bulbs in my Mini's burn out, I'll be replacing them with LED bulbs, Maglight approved or otherwise.

It is dissapointing that ML would not offer upgrades bulbs, since they have a VERY LOYAL customer base.

Did this to my used to be faithful MiniMag. Wish I had never done it, hasn't work good since.
P.S. thanks for your help in posting this, John.

I converted my Mini Maglite several years ago with an LED kit that includes a single element LED and a pushbutton tailcap switch. It works perfectly, but it doesn't appear to be any brighter than the original Maglite bulb. It's a different hue, though, more of a blue/white rather than yellow/white.

I think this is the one I used:
