Man, you have a worst case of Nikonitis than I have. Let's see:
16mm f/3.5 AI, 20mm f/2.8 AF-D, 28mm f/2.8 AF-D, 35mm f/2 AF-D, 50mm f/1.4 AF, 85mm f/1.8 AF-D, 105mm f/2.5 AIS
As for zooms, 18-35mm/3.5-4.5, 24-85mm/2.8-4, 70-300mm/4.5-5.6 all full-frame, and a 18-200mm/3.5-5.6G VR for half-frame.
All Nikkors of course!
And out of this wonderful sellection, my favorite would have to be the 105mm f2.5 .Originally Posted by John

Absolutely! Why do you think that the 105mm and the 16mm ones are the only two manual focus lenses I still have??
Best portrait lens I've ever tried. I am still trying to buy the new 135mm f/2 DC one, until then, the 105mm is my favorite lens for portraits, if you do not care for Auto Focus. The 85mm is also a great lens, but its closest focusing distance is kind of long, for tight portraits.
The 105 is my favorite portrait lens too. Oddly enough, the 24, 50 f1.4 105 and 180 all had matched color contrast back in the day. Don't know if they still do but if I had to limit myself to 4 lenses, it would be those four.
I never had an 180mm Nikkor, but I sure would like to try that focal length. It seems to be the perfect focal length of tight portraits.
Here is my "spin" on the lens:
Pros
Compact enough size
Very sharp wide open @ f2.5
Focus ring is nicely dampened and does not creep
Nice knurling / contours on focus ring
Ideal perspective for portrature
Built like a tank
Cons
None that I can think of.......![]()

I'll add another pro, but that's specific to the AI-S version, it comes with a build-in hood. I hated the old design, never trusted it. The integrated one is God-sent.
Here's a little tip for you Nikkor guys. If it takes a 52 mm filter and you can get a screw on lens hood, the Tupperware G tumbler lid makes a perfect lens cap. Fits right on the hood from 24 mm to 135rmm. Just burp it so your lens doesn't go stale
John, you gotta get one! I have a 180mm EDIF and it is awesome. I used to shoot kids BMX bike racing and this was my "do everything" lens.Originally Posted by John
