I am a known proponent of Nikon cameras (so what else is new?) but I couldn't believe the specs of Nikon's new camera.
This is the newly announced D800, with an incredible full-frame, 36Mp sensor.
Canon lovers can read the preview here and weep!!!
However, one has to wonder about Nikon's marketing too. Just a few days ago, they announced their new flagship camera, the D4. The replacement of the venerable D3 (and D3X). The D4 is admittedly a speed freak, with something like 11 fps firing speed etc, but it only has 16Mp sensor very little even by yesterday's standards, the Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII has a 21 Mp chip. Is the shooting speed and high ISO capabilities of the new D4 enough to make it the object of lust of pros? Why on earth didn't Nikon used the same 36Mp chip in the D4?
Or to put matters in another way, isn't the $3,000 D800 going to be more attractive even to pros than the D4? Unless there is a D4S coming out soon, which will have the D800 sensor coupled with the D4's speed and high ISO characteristics. At this moment, it seems that Nikon came up with a camera that will appeal to both the advanced amateurs (the price is within the price range of most of them) and the professional photographers (wedding, studio and in general everyone but the sports shooting guys).
All I can say is "Wow Nikon!!". What a camera the D800 is.
And for those who want to know, no I do not plan to buy one. I have better things to do with $3,000 and my D700 and D300 are still very fine for me. Let alone the fact that in order to do justice to the D800, one has to use the best of Nikon lenses or else all those Megapixels go unused. Which means that whoever buys that camera will need to spend another $6,000 or more, to get some top-performing glass for it. Not for me, thank you!
Still I am impressed with the specs! Congrats Nikon, job well done.
Where is Hunter by the way!??!?
