Hey Canon boys, eat this !!!!! :p

I am a known proponent of Nikon cameras (so what else is new?) but I couldn't believe the specs of Nikon's new camera.

This is the newly announced D800, with an incredible full-frame, 36Mp sensor.

Canon lovers can read the preview here and weep!!!

However, one has to wonder about Nikon's marketing too. Just a few days ago, they announced their new flagship camera, the D4. The replacement of the venerable D3 (and D3X). The D4 is admittedly a speed freak, with something like 11 fps firing speed etc, but it only has 16Mp sensor very little even by yesterday's standards, the Canon EOS 1Ds MkIII has a 21 Mp chip. Is the shooting speed and high ISO capabilities of the new D4 enough to make it the object of lust of pros? Why on earth didn't Nikon used the same 36Mp chip in the D4?

Or to put matters in another way, isn't the $3,000 D800 going to be more attractive even to pros than the D4? Unless there is a D4S coming out soon, which will have the D800 sensor coupled with the D4's speed and high ISO characteristics. At this moment, it seems that Nikon came up with a camera that will appeal to both the advanced amateurs (the price is within the price range of most of them) and the professional photographers (wedding, studio and in general everyone but the sports shooting guys).

All I can say is "Wow Nikon!!". What a camera the D800 is.

And for those who want to know, no I do not plan to buy one. I have better things to do with $3,000 and my D700 and D300 are still very fine for me. Let alone the fact that in order to do justice to the D800, one has to use the best of Nikon lenses or else all those Megapixels go unused. Which means that whoever buys that camera will need to spend another $6,000 or more, to get some top-performing glass for it. Not for me, thank you!

Still I am impressed with the specs! Congrats Nikon, job well done.

Where is Hunter by the way!??!?

Nikon has always had an odd "upside down" marketing strategy with their dSLRs. This is no different than the D300 vs D7000. Don't know why they do it, but they do.

Possibly putting all his Canon gear up on eBay?

I just got off Nikon's site....reviewed the specs and capabilities of this new rig. All I can say is....the bar has been raised to an unbelievable hight! There is a HD video shot with it and it would blow your mind!!!
I was saving for a D300s but I think I'll hold out longer for this beauty!

Usually they keep the smaller (megapixel) sensors to produce a higher frame rate. At one time these cameras were referred to as “Sports” cameras because of the fast frame rate. We got 3 new Nikons at work, the D700, D3s and the D3x. the D4 was not out when we put our request in.

Here is a comparison of the D4 and the Canon EOS 1Dx.

Something tells me that the earthquake and the following tsunami last year had somehow alter Nikon's plans for 2012.

As I mentioned before, while both new Nikons are excellent cameras (spec-wise at least), they leave a lot of questions unanswered. Especially after learning that the D700 will remain in Nikon's line, for a reduced cost of $2,200. For example?

    - Why did Nikon announced the D4, admittedly a camera below its competitors specs (mpixels and frame rate), especially a few months before the Olympics, where those cameras are expected to be used more than anything else?

    - Why didn't Nikon used the new sensor (the D800 one), in the D4? Is there a D4S coming?

    - The D800, while being a marvellous camera (again, spec-wise), it's not the D700 replacement. The D700 was marketed as an entry-level FX camera, one can hardly characterise a 36 mp camera as entry-level. Is there a D700X coming, with the D4 sensor? If so, why then Nikon announced that the D700 remains in production?

    - If you also add the fact that we still haven't seen the D300S replacement, which is expected to be more than 12 mp, where will the D400 (or whatever the D300S replacement will be called) leave the D700? Will the new DX camera have more mpixels than the "entry-level" FX one? That's hardly reasonable on Nikon's behalf.

Something tells me that we haven't seen all new cameras that Nikon has prepared for 2012.

Another strange thing is that Nikon is delaying very much the announcement of new lenses. Especially those for the DX cameras, where there are no wide-angle zooms offered yet.

    We'll see.....

But I still do not see Hunter in here, where is he?!?!?!?

I thought my D200 at 10 mp was plenty. These newer models are unreal at 35+mp. Even with mine and shooting RAW I still get a 15.6 MB pic on average. You'd think that would be more than plenty.

the other day I got an email from B&H Photo about the new Lexar SD and CF cards which the SD's are now up to 128 Gb!! Most of my CF for the D200 are 2 or 4Gb and that's plenty for me even shooting RAW that's 240 pics.

    Nikon

A Former Olympus fan who switched to Nikon and will Never go back!. I`ve had Oly`s since my OM-1 back in 1976,the Cat`s Meow then. Got into shooting wildlife in the past coupla years and had to move UP to Nikon. Here`s some pix on my site... www,halbambrick.com . I shoot with two d-90`s,one with the 18-200 zoom and the other with the 80-400 zoom. They work better than any Oly out there. Nikon Rules!.
