Found an Old Pic

Found this old pic of my father(kneeling) when he was on the Island of Biak, in 1945. I noticed he has his 1911 strapped on his side, interesting thing is it has white grips, does anyone know if it was common for soldiers to have installed different grips, and do you think they would of been plastic?

just like today gi's modifing guns with different grips would have been common. one thing that was done a fair amount was taking plexiglass from downed aircraft to make grips a type of trench art. often the picutre of family or a sweetheart would be placed under the plexiglass.

Funny you talk about plexiglass. I remember he had bought back a homemade knife made from clear plexiglass, round pieces abiut 3/8 thick from the hilt down to the base of the handle, had a good contour to it also.

Tomagc - Thanks for sharing your pic of your dad.

Funny thing that plexiglass. My dad was also a WWII Marine and used it to make crosses.

You now have me curious about WWII pics. I will have to go back through my dad's old pics to see if there is a .45 in any of them.
