Scary. John, thanks for sharing. I knew that copiers stored the data, but never gave any thought to it being made available to anyone outside of the office (or that it saved so much).

All the more reason to splurge and treat yourself to one of those all-in-one printer/scanner/fax/copier machines. They're gotten very affordable, and in Staples or Office Max it's hard to find a printer that ISN'T an all-in-one machine.

Holy cow!!! No more visits to the friendly bookstore round the corner for me! Darn, I once got a copy of my ID card there!!!
We got one of those 4 years ago, and use it almost exclusively. I didn't realise how good an idea it was until just now!Originally Posted by Hawkmoon

A Big WOW! I made many a copy on the machines at U.S.Post Offices. While it should have, it never entered my mind that my IDs and personal information were at risk.

Some companies upload networked copier data to search for banned activity with software; similar to uploading website visit history and favorites looking for the same thing.
As an aside, many yrs ago a US embassy in a foreign country discovered their locally made copier automatically made two copies. One coming out of the machine and one staying in an internal bin. As I recall the copier "broke down" when the bin filled up and the in-country copier service personnel delivered the bin contents to their local intelligence service. Low tech but effective.
I wonder what's the purpose of the disk in the copier? Is there any way to recall a copy you made a week ago?!?
Since I'm in the "document management" business, meaning I sell copiers, I'll you a brief rundown on why hard drives and what I think about the video.
First, digital copiers have hard drive so the pages can be scanned once and printed many. You may normally make only one copy at a time but the copier needs to be able to store the images of 250+ pages depending on the number of originals in a document.
Next, retrieving images aren't as easy as they made out in the story. However as a general rule of thumb if someone intends you ill and can access your hardware then they own you.
We have a DoD option that triple overwrites the HDD on our machines, there's a catch though, as this will disable a lot of cool functions that people like
