Im carrying one now, and have been for the past 7 years... A Baer SRP, Kimber TLE, STI Tactical 5.0, now a Colt Rail Gun... Also carry Lighweight Commander off duty.
Carried the 1911 on and off from 82-06. We also had access to the Beretta and Sig. I always shot Expert with the 1911 and could only shoot sharpshooter with the Beretta and Sig. Go figure!
Qualified with 1911 and M1 in Navy Reserve (71-74). As a civilian police officer, carried a Combat Commander as an off-duty gun (had to carry revolver on duty) and later (different department) carried my Gold Cup as a duty gun until the Sheriff mandated that everyone carry a Glock 21 (at least he kept the caliber right).
I carried one in Vietnam, maybe that's why it is my favorite, but I also have fond memories of my father talking of his that he carried in the Big One, my youngest brother has it.
But, I NEVER carried a 1911 in uniform! I ain't never seen a 1911 uniform, what's it look like? Or are you referring to the leather one?

If a 1911 ever had a "uniform" it certainly was the leather flap holster or the leather "tanker" shoulder holster.
