Ok. I have a "Colt 45 AUTO" marked magazine that looks like a fake, but has an "ampersand" marking on the top of the toe. I received this magazine in a lot of old WWI and WWII items, which included a WW1 marked 1911 pouch and a Boyt -43- marked WWII pouch, along with a General Shaver mag, two Risdon mags, and some Astra mag. Thoughts? See photos...

Definitely a fake but don't remember seeing that "&" mark before. I believe I see an attempt at a drain hole above the &. Drain holes started ca. the 1970s in Colt commercial or aftermarket magazines and mid1980s for military contract magazines. Could you add a full view photo of the right side of the magazine to include the magazine catch slot?

Other fake indicators include the non standard witness hole pattern position with one witness hole nearly aligned with the magazine catch slot and the rounded aft end of the slot as you mention. Rough spot welds with large gaps around the baseplate/body seam another indicator although this example better made than others in that respect.

Most of the latest fakes have the witness hole pattern even higher on the body and oversize witness holes. Many marked 30745 attempting to copy USGI but I've observed some marked COLT 45 AUTO and also blank.

I'm doing a little Mac-Gar 1911 mag research and noticed the discussion on first couple of pages has several broken picture links (that may include the answer), but there is no clear text on the subject (at least the first few pages). Is there a mark that would indicate Mac-Gar mags?

Every Mec-Gar magazine I've ever seen has been clearly stamped "Mec-Gar" somewhere on the magazine body.

All known Mec-Gar magazines I've observed also had "Made in Italy" stamps.

Photobucket seems to have decided to "turn on" third party hosting again allowing images not available for some time. This might not last long so I recommend saving any images you need before they decide to "turn off" third party hosting again.

    Another magazine question

I found this unmarked magazine at a garage sale, and I can't quite ID it. Lanyard loop, full length pin tubes, no markings, not 2-tone, and showing little wear. Did the fakers make pinned baseplate magazines? Having a difficult time attaching pictures; any advice?
