Question Fitting a Commander SLIDE to a Government frame

Hi guys,
I have already fitted a new Commander upper to my Government frame, and am having cycling issues.
I do not want to modify the frame because I still use government uppers on it as well.
I read on here that I can modify the guide rod to give the commander slide more room to cycle back and load a round, can someone help me understand this possible fix?

I saw a post here: https://forum.m1911.org/showthread.p...368#post722368

Is the poster saying I should remove material on the guide rod head making it smaller so it can essentially fit inside the recoil plug area and give more room for the slide to move back into the frame?

thanks!

No. It means exactly what John wrote in his post in the thread you linked to.

The mil-spec flange thickness is 0.088" (-.005"). By machining .044" off the back side of the flange, it will still seat on the frame abutment surface but it will move the face against which the slide stops back by .044". That may or may not be enough to improve the function. The guide doesn't go entirely inside the recess behind the flange, it just allows the guide rod head to seat deeper.

If not, there might be enough overlap between the frame and the slide to also remove .044" from the back end of the recoil spring tunnel on the slide to make up the remaining amount of travel you're missing when mounting a Commander slide on a Government frame.

Thanks for replying!

Do you mean removing material from the head:

So it resembles this?

I think this is the same person explaining the solution more in depth: https://www.pistolsmith.com/threads/...41/#post-72629

What does he mean when he says "face the butt end down so that it will clear the lower lug."

No.

I mean (and John meant) making the FLANGE thinner by shaving .044" off the back surface.

Not the same person. John Travis has posted here, and on several other forums, as "1911Tuner."

What does he mean when he says "face the butt end down so that it will clear the lower lug."
I have no idea.

Got it, thanks. I think I understand what both posters meant. And I may just go ahead and reduce the frame rail/recoil area by 0.10"
