I just received a CMP "Field Grade" M1911A1 Ithaca frame with Colt slide. I recognize most of the markings on it but cannot find any information on the number "28" that is stamped above the trigger guard. Any help would be great.

Welcome to the forum.
Some identifying/rack number applied after production; nothing mentioned in the books about Ithaca stamping numbers in that location.
Charles Clawson's Collector's Guide, 3rd Edition, page 126 lists that serial going to Transportation Officer, Raritan Ordnance Depot, Nixon, NJ on 02 January 1945.

I am pretty sure the date of the Ithaca side of it is from 1945 going off of the serial number. How can I tell the date of the Colt slide? Also, can you tell me any more information from the pictures I posted? Thank you in advance!
Some Colt slides have the serial number stamped underneath the firing pin stop. The slide stop looks later, 1949+.

The slide appears to be from 1944 and, if so, would not be numbered under the firing pin stop.
A lot of people ruin old .45s by trying to improve them.
