Help Identifying this Colt 1911 Government Model

    Greetings

I received this as a gift from my father in law a few years ago and can't seem to figure out who manufactured it and what the stamp is on the trigger guard. Any assistance is greatly appreciated! Photos provided.
    The SN reads 275107 - C
The slide stamping on the left reads: Government Model Colt Automatic Caliber .45. There are two stars around the word "model" and a Colt horse after .45.
The slide stamping on the right reads: COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN U.S.A.
There is an "F" stamped on the front left trigger guard.
On the top of the barrel at the ejector, it reads, "COLT .45 AUTO"

    Thanking you all in advance,

    Welcome to the forum.

Your pistol manufactured by Colt in 1956. F indicates final inspector.

    Of course Doran nailed it.
But in this case with the "F"....Just to clarify, the "F" is the stamp assigned to that particular inspector. The "F" doesn't stand for "Final". On the opposite side of the trigger guard, in the same place is the stamp of the Colt Employee who assembled the pistol.
The serial# dates to about 1957 and the pistol is manufactured by Colt.
The trigger shoe is aftermarket and the original gips were a brown plastic.

Thank you sir. So much information out there. I had the date right.....just wasn't sure who built the darn thing! Any knowledge of the stars around "Model"? I've never seen that before.

Thanks, hotrod, for the detailed info. Spent a long time looking to see what that "F" meant. I did notice that the hammer looked a bit different - it does not have raised edges on the back end as many other 1911's do. Do you think that is aftermarket too?

As said, the trigger shoe is an add-on and should be taken off if you plan to holster the gun.
The flat sided hammer is standard, the wide spur was discontinued during WWII to save manufacturing time and steel.

The "Stars" on the left side slide legend is correct for the time period.
