A friend of mine has this 1911A1. He's out of state so I haven't put my hands on it, but he sent me these two photos. Any idea on what's up with 'British released' on the slide?? This is supposedly a Rand. Any help will be appreciated. Trying to place a value on it. Thanks!

The Lend Lease Act provided a way for the US Govt to supply Britain with WWII war material; some number of 1911 pistols included in that effort. Britain didn't use many of the 1911s, salvaged/released them after the war and sold them.

I agree with the previous posts, it is a pity not to have other photos with the "proofs" properly highlighted.
Many of these guns remained unused, so today sometimes we can still find "lend leases" in excellent conditions.
I often tell collectors to put originality at the top of their priority list, originality isn't something that can be restored. I've never seen a 1911 I didn't like.
