Colt Night Defender Rear Sight Won't Drift!

    image1.jpg

I'm using an MGW Sight-Pro in an attempt to drift the rear sight slightly to the left on a .45 ACP Colt 1911 Night Defender...without any bloody success at all. Frustrated.

I removed the retaining screw...added a little lubricant under the sight (with a prayer)...everything on the MGW is nice & tight...I've hand cranked the sight pusher gears more than you know without moving anything & I'm afraid to apply more pressure...I'm leaving the slide as it is in the MGW over night...tomorrow I'll check the Board to see if anyone posted any pearls of wisdom before I touch it again.

Anyone know why Colt would "weld" the rear sight to the Defender's slide?

Take a soldering iron and hold it on the set screw hole in the sight for a minute or so. The heat should break down the red LocTite, and the sight should then be moveable.

Ah, so there is red LocTite at work here, is there? I never would have guessed that.

Would a heat guns work also? I have one of those at hand. If not, I can fold a S. gun also.

Thank you so much for responding to me like that so fast!

I believe that there must be, since you can’t move it with a sight pusher.

Many manufacturers use red LocTite on the rear sight set screw(s), which often binds up the sight.

It looks like the sight pusher "jaws" are not aligned with the dovetail.

If so, is it possible to reposition the slide so that the jaws are applying force right near the dovetail, rather than the rear of the sight?

If the force is not at the sight dovetail, the sight will try to twist within the slide dovetail, causing unnecessary binding.

Soldering irons work well for releasing locking compounds.

I have removed locked setscrews with a small pointed soldering iron tip.

Adding some high temperature grease to the contact area helps a lot in heat transfer.

I see what you mean! I will follow your soldering iron advice & reposition the jaws. Thank you!
