Would this info re the V assembler's mark indicate a specific manufacturer? I know the serial number came back to Colt, but there was some well founded concern regarding the validity of the serial number. Thanks!!!!

The receiver is mid 1917 or later as the USP does not have serifs.

Your Colt started life as the brother of the one I recently got from the CMP. Mine was made 130 guns after yours. It's too bad it was buffed so hard. Do you have any idea what happened to the original slide?

After reading Scott's post I had to take a closer look at the serial number. I have to revise my previous post. I have no idea when it was made with one or more of the numbers buffed off. I thought I could see the shadow of an eight to the left of the six, but I wouldn't swear to it. Scott, you have me really confused. I looked at my Colt that is in the 65000 range (1914) and the USP has serifs. Then I looked at Poyer's book and he says that after #104-EOP the USP was san serif. I though we could get in the ballpark if we could determine when the transition took place, but according to Poyer it happened in 1912 even as I am looking at proof that it happened after 1914. Help!

Kbe51, Welcome to the world of “ nothing is cast in concrete” when it comes to firearms production. Your pistol may be in the normal progression of that type of font and some reference material is not totally accurate, or some outside issue influenced your run such as the roll die in use was broken and an old die was introduced to keep the line moving. The only way to determine is to begin sampling pistols in both directions to determine when the new form of stamping was introduced, and then itt may not tell the entire story.
