1918 British Contract RAF .455 Colt Government Model Pistol

Here for your viewing pleasure are photos of my WWI RAF British military proofed Colt 1911. It was one of 400 pistols shipped to Captain Sir Connop Guthrie, Pier 60, North River NY NY on March 12, 1918. Guthrie was the Special Representative for the British Ministry of Shipping in the U.S. and a member of the U.S. Shipping Commission in 1918. It has the view mark for G.W.R. Steadman, British Inspector at the Colt New Haven Factory and the British Broad Arrow and Crossed Pennant military acceptance marks. Serial number is W 100744. Close ups show barrel markings indicating .455 Self Loading Webley Automatic cartridge length .900 inch, pressure 9 tons/square inch.

How did the ballistics compare to the 45 ACP?

According to Wikipedia, .455 Webley Auto Mk 1 service round from 1913 was loaded with a 224 grain cupro-nickel-jacketed bullet with a muzzle velocity of 700 feet per second. On the other hand a 230 grain Winchester .45 ACP has a velocity of 835 FPS. Now if we also take in to comparison a .45 Colt, its velocities range at around 900 FPS. Here are a 7-round packet of WWI issue Webley .455 auto ammo (note "Not for revolvers stamp" to warn against use in the Webley Scott revolvers which took a different round), 1917/1918 head stamp Webley auto ammo and a box containing some 300 rounds of this ammo issued in the 7-round packet. Also shown are Webley .455 auto and 45ACP comparisons.
