Charles Clawson's Commercial Series book lists 1925 but does not give a destination. A Colt letter would give you that information.

Does it have a C in front of the serial number? If not it is a older military frame. If it has the C as part of the serial number, that makes a difference

If it is "C 144892" it is a 1925 commercial Government Model
If it is "No. 144892" it is a 1917 Model 1911 military contract sidearm.
If it is "144892" is it a 1959 Super .38 but there would be clear identifying marks and a smaller hole in the barrel.
There are 15 other Colts with that serial number but they are obviously not related to the 1911.

A factory letter will cost $100 and tell you when and to what distributor, dealer, or military depot it was shipped. Also some catalog information like finish and grips.
It will not give any information on the end user except in the very rare case of a gun going to some well known individual.
There is some book information on military shipments, maybe somebody will come along on that.
