This looks like it has a Govt.-length dust cover and a shorter than normal spring tunnel in the slide. It'll be interesting to see if that spring plug fits OK in it...

But is this a current model or one from 2001? There have been a lot of changes in AO in this time, so we can't assume this corresponds to a gun made back then.

    Spyros:

I agree that the frame looks more Gov’t. Model sized than Commander, but how can you tell from the pic how long the dust cover on the slide is?

Well, if it has a 4.25" barrel (which AO's website says it has) and it has a Govt. length dust cover (on the frame), then the spring tunnel on the slide must be correspondingly shorter than that of a Colt Commander. Plus, I have a Colt Commander, and the curve of the side of the slide (just above the spring tunnel) is a good visual cue, showing it's shorter.

That area on the slide is why I happen not to like 4" 1911s (with bull barrels), as offered by SAM/Metroarms, SA, Wilson and many others. They just look... off, to my [rather pedantic] eye.

Oh, so you’re using the machined “curves down” on the front of the slide to determine here the dust cover ends. That makes sense.

Here’s my malformed Wilson Professional as a further example:

Malformed? That's a bit strict... I like it better than a 4.25" pistol with a govt. length dustcover.

Basically yes, the portion of the "curves down" area (nobody seems to agree what to call it, the best description I've seen is "spring tunnel cut radius") that is parallel to the slide, at the front, is visibly smaller compared to that of a Colt Commander.
