The manual says to remove the slide from the frame before inserting the paper clip. Every video shows inserting the paper before removing the slide. Isn't it easier to remove the slide if you insert & capture the recoil spring first. Or am I not understanding something? Thanks

The recoil spring needs to be compressed and captivated for removal from, and installation in the slide.

In the case of the procedure described in the manual, you have to compress the spring by pushing the guide rod forward, after the slide assembly has been removed from the frame. There is a disadvantage here, in that you have to fight against the spring tension twice: once to align the slide stop with the removal notch, and again to compress the spring for captivation.

Alternately, you can use the slide to compress the spring and captivate it before removing the slide. This only requires holding the slide all the way back. The slide stop can then be removed under no spring tension, and the spring is already captivated.

So yes, it can be easier to capture the spring first. Both procedures work.
