    Going Retro

Over the last couple of years, back problems have caused me to use lighter pistols for EDC than my beloved 1911’s, which were my primary carry guns for over 30 years.

I recently broke out my Custom Carry Comanche, and started carrying it again, OWB, in a leather Mitch Rosen holster.

I’d forgotten how easily even the all steel 1911’s carry, and hide, using just a tee shirt as a cover garment.

I’ve had it for about 8 1/2 years now.

    Rick,

I've been carrying a LBC .38 Super Stinger for years now and agree that carrying steel isn't that hard with a good belt and holster. The only size difference of the Stinger to a Commanche is the grip length, I think the half inch shorter grip helps with concealing.

I spent time at SHOT with Les when the Super Stinger was introduced. My concern is recoil as I damaged my wrist a number of years ago and 45acp is uncomfortable. Les thought the recoil with .38s was significantly less than 45acp, I agree although at some time I may need to switch to a 9. This may be important to those that have some level of hand, wrist, arm or shoulder damage. I've spoken to a number of instructors that have switched to lighter calibers due to wear & tear over the years.

    Hey Jim.

When I attend high round count training courses, I shoot a 9mm for just that reason (plus it’s cheaper).

Very nice, for a long time my EDC’s have primarily been 4” steel 1911’s and it is amazing how easily they carry with a good quality belt and holster. Sparks 55BN or Criterion.

The full size 1911’s actually carry just as easily. I have a LW Gov’t. Model that I’ve carried a lot, and the all steel ones don’t weigh that much more than the all steel Commander sized ones.

Rick, I find as you do that 1911s carry very well in a Mitch Rosen OWB. I like .38 Super, but certainly 9mm is cheaper. I suppose I am just a at heart a traditionalist who doesn't want to let go of an old caliber whose ballistics are outmoded. But it shoots so well...

Yes, they do. I often also carry a full steel Commander and also a 5”. Only have a Sparks VMII for the 5” but am waiting on a 55BN for that also that should be almost up in the que at Sparks, as it was ordered the first of May.

It is quite handsome and functional.

Oh, what the heck... That is downright pretty. Rick, I can always count on you for some classy stuff.
