Gary, sorry you are having serious problems with your Wilson firearm. I stick with Colt 1911's and haven't had a problem in over 50 years!
    Glad you were not hurt.

A Colt doesn't hold up to a stuck bullet very well, either. Seen it, fortunately a target load that only bulged the barrel and didn't split it.

I have read that it is possible to stick a bullet and cycle the slide, but it has to be a rare thing.

Anyways, the pistol is on its' way back to Wilson for evaluation. I will share any information when we know more. Note:The Magtech ammunition was not being fired when this gun blew up. The entire box had been shot through the pistol. He was shooting a brand of defense ammunition recommended by Wilson. Not sure what brand that was.

    Thanks to all!!!

It is entirely possible for a squib to cycle the slide and fail to leave the barrel. It happened to me. To add drama, it was the last round and the slide locked back, spitting oil wetted power all around the breach and all over my hand. It didn't put much on my face, but it reminded me of the importance of eye protection.

The gun was a .380 and the ammo was cheap Russian . I have since moved on to a better grade of Russian .380.

Was that a straight blowback gun?

Big difference in that case, since the slide and bullet can accelerate (and decelerate) independently.

1911 .45 are locked breech, delayed blowback. The slide and barrel remain locked together for the entire resident time of the squib bullet.

You are correct, that would make it much more likely to cycle.

Very interested in hearing what Wilson says after they get the gun into the shop.

    Jim,
All I said was it has never happened to me in over 50 years of owning a Colt 1911. Others may not have been as lucky as I have been.

This was the subject of one of those 'epic' 100-page threads, some time ago... a thread featuring Niemi trying to replicate the phenomenon. He managed to get the bullet (a lead semi-wadcutter) to poke its nose out of the muzzle, and stop. He also had a smoked-up gizmo on the side of the slide, to record slide travel. The slide didn't move back more than 1/8", IIRC.

Maybe there's another way to skin this cat, but IMO it's not possible for the slide of a 1911 to cycle with a squib load.

Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.

    This was ammo problem

Most of us recognize this, but it merits emphasis for anyone who doesn't:

A round fired when there is a squib round lodged in the barrel will destroy any 1911 (and probably almost any other firearm as well).

One person here has reported no problems with a Colt. But we must recognize that firing a round in a Colt 1911 with a squib round lodged in the barrel will most assuredly result in utter destruction of any Colt 1911 firearm.

When a squib round is the culprit, a $6,000 1911 will suffer the same fate as a $600 1911.

The manufacturer of the gun is irrelevant when the problem is firing with a squib round stuck in the barrel.

    ----------------

Separately, I think many of us here would be interested in knowing the specific ammo used. No ammo is wholly except from a possible failure, but still I think some curious minds would like to know.

I don't use my SGs much on the range, partly to avoid unnecessary wear/tear, and when I do, I use only Wilson's own in-house manufactured ammo. I do not know whether this reduces risk exposure to squib loads, but I have a hunch (but cannot prove it as absolute fact) that Wilson's QC processes for their own ammo are absolute top tier.

Comments and thoughts, including any disagreements, on these observations are welcomed.
