I'm well aware of .38 Special +P ... for revolvers. This discussion is about 1911s, which is why your comment confused me.

Yes, pretty much all .38 Super ammo is marked +P, because .38 Super is in reality the +P variant of the original .38 ACP round.

Sorry, thought we were talking about the +P designation in general.

Shooters beware, there are no published standards for +p in .40 or 10mm or any revolver or rifle cartridges not listed by SAAMI.
Acme Ammunition can advertise .40 +P but all it means is that they are overloading it to some degree.

From what I have seen the top .45 carry rounds are non plus P. For some reason +P ammo in 45 acp does not increase it's stopping power by much .
The top hollowpoint loads for expansion are the Federal HST , Speer Gold Dot, and a honarable mention to the Golden saber. All 230 gr. non Plus P.

With that said the 5 inch 1911 platform can handle +P ammo. It is recommended to change the recoil spring to a 18 lb and you can try a shok buff.
Make sure your gun runs 100% with the Shok buff.
