    Ban the GUNZ!

The anti-gunners ... now parroted by a group of students from Parkland ... want to ban guns to "eliminate" (according to the students) violence.

That didn't work out so well in the UK. London has seen more murders with knives this year than New York City has seen murders with firearms.

    Hmmm ...

And now a rather well-known British political commentator, when quizzed (with some irony) if knives used in assaults might be called 'assault knives', answered that Britain will definitely toughen knife laws. Without any irony whatever.

Both the U.S. and the UK are rapidly reaching the point where the only new laws that can be enacted are laws that essentially say "Unlawful ___ shall henceforth be double-dog illegal."

    So there!

The British 'knife-crime' debate is made even more interesting by the simple fact that the knives most often used by criminals aren't anything like the 'tactical' or just outdoor knives you may have in mind -- they're usually kitchen knives, either unmodified ones, like the ones currently resting on your kitchen counter, or they may have been modified slightly. The reason criminals go for them is quite simply that they're cheap, easy to find and won't raise an eyebrow when you buy one from your friendly corner shop.

So this is about as perfect a real-world example as you can find of a situation where banning or even legislating an inanimate object is completely pointless: you can't define what the offending item is (tactical knife?) and even if you establish some sort of criteria to ban, another, even more plentiful and cheap object can (and does) do the job just as dangerously.

And yet they're still discussing it.

What are the major innovations that really got homo sapiens started on the road to what we might call "civilization"? My list:

    • Fire
    • Knife
    • Wheel

And, of course, all three can be misused, to attack, injure, and kill other people. So in the interest of saving lives, we'll just outlaw knives. That will put butchers out of business, your wife or mother (or both) are going to be VERY unhappy in the kitchen, sailors are going to have a heckuva time doing marlinspike seamanship, hunters will have to find other ways to skin the game they kill, ...

And the bad people who want to do harm will just turn to other tools -- like fire. Arson works great for killing large numbers of people. Okay then -- next we'll outlaw fire.

Which brings us to the wheel. Terrorists are already running people over in all parts of the world, so there should be no question about this one -- BAN THE WHEEL! It's for the children!

And, with that, we have just set civilization back about 10,000 years. And bad people will still find ways to kill other people.

Well it depends: when you outlaw fire, technically you're also outlawing spark plugs, so you can't have the engine the wheels are driving, to run people over. So there's no need to ban wheels, we'll just need to have a horse drawing them. Hopefully people can sidestep horse carts driven by terrorists, but we'll evaluate this at a later date.

Wait, diesels don't have spark plugs...

I have read the article about knives in England, which are very high in number since guns owned possessed by civilians have been banned there for years. That is what the anti gun pols and anti gun grous wnat to do here, is to eliminate the Second Amendment and say we no longer have a right to bear arms. The shooting in Parkland, Fl on Feb. 14,2018 has opened every gun control group to portest and have meeting with like minded politicians. It amazes me that the anti gun pols and groups never mention using the exisitig laws already in place to combat gun violence. Gun violence plagues urban areas, like Chicago, New York, LA, and other cities in CA as well as other large cities. these are places where strict gun laws have already been in place and they don't affect individuals who already have the intent to do harm to others. What happened in Fl. was a tragedy. The anti gun pols and groups look at countries like Austrailia, where guns were banned and melted down after a shooting spree. This costs money and leaves law abiding people helpless. Crime In Austrailia went up because bad guys could commit crimes with whatever type of implement or weapon they could obtain. Gun Control laws only affec and turn law abiding gun owners into criminals for possessing either and assault rifle or large capacity magazines, depending on the state where one lives and the new laws being put into place after Parkland, FL. very sad what is happening in our country many pols need to be voted out of recalled from their elected offices for supporting gun control laws that do nothing against criminal use of firearms.
