Looking for New Barrel. Any Recommendations, Please?

This is for an original M1911, serial number 19XXX. Production date in the 1920's. I need a barrel that will drop right in. I don't have a good and / or honest gunsmith closer than 40 miles away that can fit a new barrel. Hoping to buy one, do a field strip and drop her in. Why? Really sloppy chambering resulting in burns covering most of the case. Thank you in advance. Hot Ajax

Are you looking for a correct USGI barrel, or do you just need a drop-in barrel for shooting?

Are you shooting factory ammo, or reloads? Light loads can cause black soot on the fired cases as a result of the brass not fully obturating (expanding) to seal to the chamber wall.

    Welcome to the forum.

Please post some photos of the pistol and barrel. Serial 19XXX too low for 1920s.

Hawk: Thank you for responding. First, I don't know what "USGI" means. If you tell me, then we both will know. I have been shooting Remington factory loads, no reloads. All that I am trying to achieve is to tighten up the chamber a bit and increase accuracy, but certainly not to competition standards of accuracy. Once again, thanks. Hot Ajax

"USGI" means United States Government Issue. In other words, are you looking for a replacement barrel that will be correct for your M1911 pistol, or are you just looking for a barrel that will drop in and shoot better than what you have?

Hawk: looking for govt issue if it's possible to find one that's not trashed. This pistol "ain't no prom queen" but I'd like to keep it as close to original as possible. Thanks.

An original barrel has definite markings depending upon year of manufacture. A barrel in the range you give for a serial has a vertical H on the back of the barrel hood and rather expensive/hard to find. A WWII era or post war era barrel might "drop in" and cost less.

Personally, for reasons explained in a thread started by Scott Gamimer ( https://forum.m1911.org/showthread.p...nal-USGI-M1911 ), I wouldn't shoot a WW1 M1911 at all. But, if I were using one as a shooter, I wouldn't spend big bucks on a "correct" barrel that very possibly won't shoot any better than the original. I'd go to Sarco and buy one of their $50 drop-in barrels, and just keep the original barrel with the gun for correctness.
