Semi auto rifle useing 1911 for its firing mechanism

Some years back, I saw an ad in Shotgun News. It was for a semi auto rifle in 5.56mm or 7.62mm, but it used a 19ll for the firing mechanism that would clip in place on the rifle.

This was in my pre-inter-net days. If any one knows about them I would appreciate your information!

Do an internet search for "Springfield Armory 1911-A2 SASS", I think it's probably what you're after. 'Probably' because there have been other efforts along the same principle, i.e. to mount a 1911 frame onto a 'carbine' upper, to make a long-arm of shorts. The SA was single-shot and was sold both as a kit and as a complete gun in this configuration, but there were cheaper, stamped steel variants along similar lines. Some were even semi-autos. If you Google "1911 carbine conversion" you'll find some more.

Not MechTech, what I am looking for was in rifle cartridges 5.56mm and 7.62 mm!

In these calibers it would really need to be a single shot. Mectech uses the frame AND the magazine of the pistols that it is built for. So they obviously only offer pistol calibers. The SA SASS is for rifle calibers.
