Not a Colt, but I've owned a 3" Para-Ordnance Slim Hawg for many years. I just checked my shooting log. When it was new, the first trip to the range produced several problems. But I was shooting Amerc ammo, which was known for being trash. Since I used up the last of the Amerc, the last problems were three failures to feed and one stovepipe stoppage. All were back in 2009, and all were my early handloads.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Colt Defender. A 3" Kimber? To be honest, I don't want any Kimber, of any length.

Yes Colt Defender w/o sights in .45. Joy to carry. Not enjoyable to shoot multiple rounds of ammo through.

A Defender without sights? Or do you have a New Agent?

I had a several year, difficult love affair with "3 inch" M1911 pistols (plural). There's one in my avatar. I think the Colt Officer ACP was 3.5" though, and was the best of the bunch. Past tense and no desire to repeat the ordeal. I'd also never consider a Kimber again. Pretty and toxic. SIG makes several nice pistols but their attempt at the M1911 ain't one of them.

Ruger just brought a 3.6" 9mm to market. It might be worth checking out if you want a small 1911 type.

I haven't shot a 3" Colt. I've had a Kimber Ultra II CDP for about 10 years. After the initial range trip and cleaning it has reliable and accurate. After hearing many stories of problems with 3" 1911s, I've been cautious to keep it clean and properly lubed at all times.

I have a 2002 Defender I bought new in 2002 and carried a few years. It is O.K. but I live in a more rural environment so these days I carry a Colt/Talo Clapp Commander mainly for the increased sight radius. Below is the 2002 in 45 on top and a 2010 in 9mm on the bottom. I changed the rubber wrap around grips to wood stocks on both.

The 2002 in 45 had a couple failures to extract as I recall in the first 50 rounds and after that it has been fine to well over 2K rounds. At the range I shoot 230gr FMJ and I carried and did some practice with 230gr JHP. I did play with about 50 rounds of my cast 225gr SWC handloads once and they all worked O.K.

The 2010 in 9mm has been 100% since round 1 but it is a range toy so mainly have just shot 115gr and 124gr JHP through it.

Owned a 9mm Colt New Agent for more than seven years. The gun was completely reliable from Day One. The New Agent was among the heavier 3" guns to carry. Still it was very easy to conceal and well suited for close-quarter scenarios. The gun's trench sight eliminated any chance of a snag when drawing from whatever. However, a trench sight can be tricky, as it was for me. Eventually, I installed Crimson Trace Master Series rosewood laser grips, Also refinished the gun with Robar's NP3+ and replaced the plastic MSH with a Smith & Alexander arched and checkered MSH. But I still wasn't able to maintain accuracy beyond 30 ft. So, I sold it.
