I have my own thoughts about the Photobucket issue that John wrote about in his editorial. In there, John wrote:

Other people have reported problems with deleting their albums and their accounts. Now ... why would that be a problem?

If you read the terms of service, when you sign on to use Photobucket to store your photos, you grant them a license to use YOUR images in any way they want ... with no payment to you ... as long as your images reside on their servers. You still own the copyright, but you granted Photobucket a license to make money from your photos. They can display them in public collections, and they can sell copies of YOUR photos to anyone who wants to buy a copy, or buy a print. If you want an example, just fire up your search engine and search for "lighthouses+images". One of your first search results will be Photobucket, and when you go there you'll see hundreds or thousands of photos (some good, some not so good) of lighthouses. Where do you suppose those images came from? They were uploaded by people just like you and me, people who entrusted their images to Photobucket for storage and for convenient linking on forums or on Facebook.

Obviously, Photobucket has a vested interest in retaining those images on their site. It doesn't matter whether or not you are actively using their service. It doesn't matter if they have blocked your images from displaying where YOU want them to show up. They're still on Photobucket, which means Photobucket can still make money off YOUR photos.

This is why I advocate first deleting each of your albums from their site, THEN cancelling your account. If you only cancel your account, there's no way of knowing if that deletes all your images, or if it leaves them there for Photobucket to continue making money from.
