    Update (of sorts):

    From another forum --

    Amazon Prime photospace won't give you clean image file links that end in .gpg .gif etc. so they can be rendered with IMG tags.

    Imgur is off the list right out. They say in their terms of service that using them for linking to forum posts violates their TOS, even though everyone does it. And Imgur has been quietly engaging in SJW fights with various right wing and gun boards, so you have to add an extension or monkey with your browser's HTTP referrer settings to prevent them from seeing the website they've banned.
    So ... no imgur.com and no Amazon Prime. The list of alternatives is shrinking.

    They finally got to me. My photos in the 1911 Magazine Identification sticky now have the 3rd party hosting warning. I still see a few PB linked photos in the sticky but likely those also going away as soon as they filter down thru all users.

    I saved a copy of the sticky to my hard drive several months ago in anticipation of something like this. The saved copy still shows all photos hosted on page 1 as of that date for some reason. However, when I click on page 2 it seems to go to the live forum instead of the saved file and nearly all photos have the warning.

    Linking to Image Shack from web forums will cost $3.99/month

    Any free accounts (non-premium) will no longer deliver images to any sites, blogs or forums. This change will be implemented by November 1st, 2015. If you have a free account, have images that are linked to any sites, blogs or forums and want to continue to have images delivered to those pages, please convert to premium* account here: https://imageshack.us/upgrade, for only $3.99/mo, you will continue to have unlimited storage and unlimited delivery of your images.

    I switched to imgur.com and have had no problem at all. I did take me quite a while (honest - a few hours) to slowly migrate all my photos and photo albums off Photobucket and onto Imgur.

    What did you do about the TOS violation? Anything?

    I had an image up on another board. Lasted about 2 days before they pulled it and put in their ransom demand.

    Reading the policy change notice, since the $400/yr covers unlimited commercial hosting, I'm wondering if forums can pay that fee and have member images hosted that way. The $400 for individuals is absurd and people will forgo posting images before they will pay it, but if a bulletin board is able to pay them to do it, that would be one work around. I used to use Image Shack, but dropped it when it became paid-only. These days, many board have an upload manager turned on so people can host their images on the board itself, but that undoubtedly does eat up a lot of bandwidth as well as storage space.

    Unclenick, as we have already commented M1911.org has allowed attaching photos for some time now. Going forward, we suggest that our members do that if they want to post images. Unfortunately, that doesn't solve the problem of how to rescue thirteen years worth of images in old posts that have been hosted on services that changed their terms of service and now require payment (exorbitant payment, in the case of Photobucket) to reactivate the links. Neither does the notion of the forum itself buying an account, be it with Photobucket or one of the other image hosting services. A new account would be an empty account. Someone would have to copy each member's images into the new forum account ... and then the images would all have new URLs, so someone would have to go through all the old posts to change the links to the new image URLs. The task seems Herculean.

    And, as much as I dislike making the comment, having an account for a forum -- any forum, not just M1911.org -- would mean having to appoint moderators for the photo account. Human nature is still human nature. If John were to buy an account for us here at M1911.org to use for the forum, how long do you think it would be before some members would start using it to host their personal photos so they could link to them on Facebook without buying their own account? We might even find someone finding out the account exists and using it to host adult or child pornography. And what accountability would there be? Each account only has one user name and one password -- a "club" account would have the log-in shared by however many tens of thousands of members there are, plus anyone else who finds out the log-in info. Aside from the fact that sharing the log-in info is itself a violation of the terms of service, if someone were to use a group account o host illicit images -- how would we ever find out who uploaded them?

    ButchA, I looked at imgur, but their terms of service also prohibit using a free account for third party hosting. Are you paying for your imgur account?

    I thought our FAQ on including images in posts had been updated to include how to use attachment, but I see that it hasn't. We'll get on that ASAP and we'll post an announcement when the FAQ has been updated.

    My Posting Permissions window at the bottom says I don't have permission to post attachments in this thread. I don't see anything that distinguishes image files from attachments. If there is another mechanism, I would like to know of it. I clicked on the Advanced composition option, because that's where we have the attachment management menu (includes photo files) at The Shooter's Forum, but I don't see that option available here.

    {Edit: I just found this whole pile of gun images on IMGUR: http://imgur.com/r/gunshttp://imgur.com/r/guns. The only thing I see in the TOS is that they prohibit content that promotes crime and violence, which I'm sure an anti-gun person would interpret to include firearm images, but the presence of a collection there on how WWII weapons work tells me they likely are not looking at it that way. They do prohibit the use of IMGUR as a web site content host, but they allow Facebook and other social media postings (see where they claim the right to include any image posted in public media in their gallery), so the question is, do they see a BBS as a web site or as a form of social media? I should think it's like a Facebook page with a really big following. So, I just don't know.}
