    Kimber Eclipse Custom 2017

    Hello,

I am considering an Eclipse Custom 2017 in 10mm.

    Question...are these series 70 or 80 pistols?

    Thanks..

    Neither.

If it's a "Custom II," it has a firing pin safety plunger that's activated by the grip safety. Most kimber folks call it a "Swartz" system, after a similar one that Colt used briefly just before WWII.

If it doesn't have a "II" on the slide; it won't have the Swartz system.

Thanks for the response. So the 2017, lacking the firing pin safety, or Schwartz system, should make it a Series 70.

The Eclipse for 2017 is still a Custom II, and therefore comes with a firing pin safety plunger. As far as I recall, the only models offered by Kimber without a firing pin safety plunger are the Warrior series.

If you get a chance to look at the pistol then lock the slide back, turn it over and look for a plunger. The 1911s I am aware of that have a mechanical firing pin safety have a plunger in the slide. Below on the left a pre 80 Series Colt with no safety. Next a Series 80 Colt. Next a Kimber with the Swartz type safety. On the right is a S&W with a mechanical firing pin safety based off the grip safety but not related to the old Colt Swartz safety.

And the top of the frames in the same order showing the pin or levers that push the safety up.

The Eclipses I have seen in gun stores are called Eclipse II and have the safety but I notice on the Kimber web site they are no longer called II, so you might look at the one you are considering buying.

The new Eclipses don't have a "II" and do not have the FPS.

And they aren’t “series 70” pistols, either.

Series 70 and series 80 are specific to Colts.

When even Colt calls pistols without firing pin obstructions "Series 70" correct nomenclature is hard to enforce.

To the OP, I would note that I have quite a few rounds down range and the swartz safety on my TLE II has never given me a problem. On the other hand, if you just want one without a swartz for whatever reason, there is the Warrior, which is a fine pistol also.

I wonder if Kimbers uses Titanium firing pins on their new pistols without their mechanical firing pin safety. I know Colt does on their new "Series 70" and Colt/Talo Clapp pistols, or at least the ones I have. Also S&W is using them on their new E series and Perf Center models without their mechanical firing pin safety or again the ones I have.
