This is an unboxing video of a Ruger 1911. There is a card in the very top of every Ruger box that says attention in big black bold letters and specifically states Stainless steel firearms are not rust proof but rust resistance.

Then I stored a couple of plastic tubs of granular chlorine (for swimming pools) for a friend... bad, bad, idea. The tubs didn't even touch it, I'd placed them on the floor, under it! A month or so later when I removed them and peered under the bottom shelf, I was horrified to see two almost perfectly circular rust patterns, right over where the tubs had been. It cleaned up well with some scrubbing. That day's lesson: even really good stainless steel isn't really stainless.
    Spyros,
Bad idea to have chlorine in the same room with any metal. I put a plastic bucket full of chlorine tabs with a lid on it in my workshop, within about a month I had to wire brush
just about all of my tools. Each tab was sealed separately, and like I said the bucket had a tight lid on it.

I keep ALL of my chlorinating products for my pool, OUTSIDE. Never in my home or garage. Remember, chorine mixed with petroleum products can quickly become an unstable explosive.

Nice. My storage arrangements were only temporary, but it's good to know!
Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.

Call me crazy, but I just don't understand why there are still so many people who are astonished that a Stainless Steel firearm can and will rust? Stainless Steel firearms have been around since the 60's. (I believe the Smith & Wesson Chief's Special was one of the first models to offer Stainless). Today there are literally millions of them out there. Many in wet, humid climates. They are more rust resistant than carbon steel blued models. But of course they will rust like any other firearm will if not given proper care and oiling.

What makes Stainless Steel truly "rust proof" is a high Chromium and Nickel content. Much like what Stainless Steel tableware is made from. Spoons, and forks are hot stamped, not machined. So the fact that high Nickel Stainless Steel is very tough to machine doesn't effect that product. Firearms are another matter entirely. They require very intricate machining to very close tolerances. Trying to accomplish that with high Chromium and Nickel Stainless Steel would be an all but impossible task to accomplish at a competitive cost. It would price Stainless Steel guns out of the market because machining it is so tough on tooling. It also makes it much more difficult to hold the close tolerances required in firearms manufacturing. So manufacturers reduce the Nickel content to allow for increased machinability. This also allows for rust to occur if neglected. The bottom line is if you take the same care of your Stainless Steel guns, as you do your blued models. You won't have rusting issues.

In general people wrongly believe that ss doesn't rust, stainless steel is only more resistant to rust than mild steel, but a very humid environment, or over our body salty swet can damage it.
Originality can't be restored, so put "originality" at the top of a priority list. If JMB didn't put it on the 1911 you don't need it.

The only corrosion I have seen on a stainless gun was right out of the box in an oily bag. I did not reject the shipment because it was one of the last of the model before the maker went to a new model at a higher price for features I did not want anyhow.
It cleaned off leaving only the faintest of dull flecks.
It has not reoccurred in the face of fouling and sweat.

Picked up a new Ruger 1911 in 10mm and when you first open the box there was a warning card that said stainless is not rustless .. I'm not home for the week or i'd post a pic
