Night Sights for STI Escort - Recommendations

    Hello all

I would like to get at least a front night sight - TFO preferred - for my 2013 vintage STI Escort. It currently has what I believe are the standard 3-dot sights, with adjustable rear sight. I have heard "Dawson Precision" mentioned, as well as "10-8". I searched the forum but didn't see any discussion on this. Has anyone gotten night sights for an Escort? If so, please let me know options for manufacturers, and what size, model, dimensions, etc. to ask for. And I fully intend to have these installed by a 1911-familiar gunsmith. Thanks in advance for guidance and suggestions.

    Hi Bob,
I don't have any information on the Escort - only that the one's I have had my paws on were really nice. On the other hand, I give Dawson Precision sights an enthusiastic thumbs up. Dawson has been STI's highest volume dealer for some time. You could also get in touch with STI themselves to see what they might have for you.

    Hi Pyrenean
Thanks for the info. I did contact STI, so will see what they say; at the least maybe I can find out the dimensions needed. I'll have to contact Dawson, as looking at their website I didn't see much offered for STI 1911s. I also found a website: http://ussightingsystems.com/sights-7/1911 that has a ton of different sight options. I may contact them also.
I do really like the Escort - handsome gun, pleasure to shoot, and more accurate than I am.

    Hi again, Bob,

ussightingsystems.com looks familiar to me. It is actually Fusion Firearms. Look around for reviews. I failed to mention that Dawson is located only a few miles away from STI. A lot of 1911 parts are manufactured in that area of Central Texas. Even a small metal shop near me, 100 or so miles north of STI, does some piece work for Dawson.

If I did my homework correctly, your front sight has a Heinie cut dovetail (.300 x 60º). That might help you pin down what sights might fit. In any case, STI should be able to figure out what sight you need

    Hi Pyrenean

I heard back from both Fusion Firearms and STI. Fusion said they could custom make a set of night sights for me with U-notch back and XS STI/Wilson style front, but didn't mention a cost. Zane at STI also responded: He said I need the 0.140-in tall tritium front sight, and they have two choices for night sights sets: Adjustable Rear Sight (like is on the gun now) with Tritium bar sights set (225-03050005-00 for $150) and fixed one-dot rear sight set (225-03060002-00 for $100). Of note, the STI website shows dimensions of bomar cut 0.359 65° for the adjustable set and novak cut 0.360 65° for the fixed sight set - I think these are for the rear sight, since their regular front sights (not night sights) have the dimensions you noted (0.300 60°) for all the choices.

I supposed an option is to just get the front tritium sight (0.300 60° at 0.140" tall) and keep the rear adjustable sight. That is what I did on my Taurus 709 Slim, and it works fine.

    Thanks again for the info!

    Hi Bob,

I did a bit more searching at one of the regional STI dealers, Brazos Custom. They have an online store that shows pictures of various STI sights. http://www.1911store.com/frontrearsights.aspx
From your note, the STI description of the Escort, and the details for the Tritium Bar on the Brazos Custom site, http://www.1911store.com/rearsightst...abletas-1.aspx
, my guess is you have the TAS Novak-cut Rear (65 degrees x .495" x .125"). The fixed TAS description, http://www.1911store.com/sightsetsti-fixedtritium.aspx, also claims the .140" tall Heinie-cut front site. So, Brazos Custom agrees with STI on the front site. It is nice to know that STI knows their product The rear sight dimensions on Brazo's site are different than that 0.260 65° in your post.

I don't think a Bomar would be an appropriate site for carry and you would have to have your pistol's slide modified for a Bomar. I have a Bomar clone on one of my range-only pistols. The sight is great for range work but would be too "snaggy" for carry.

I do not see a listing on Brownells for a 1.40 Heinie front sight. XSights lists some STI Compact sights, http://www.xssights.com/Products.aspx?CAT=8387, but do not list dimensions. Dawson lists https://dawsonprecision.com/sti-tritium-front-sights/ a .140 STI Tritium front sight for $49. They also list some sight sets but only for 5"+ guns. Wilson Combat shows a .140 Heinie, http://shopwilsoncombat.com/Snag-Fre...info/367TF140/. They also show other options but those are going far afield.

In any case, it seems you have a lot of options available.

Thanks much for the additional source info, Pyrenean. I do appreciate it. And for catching my typo on the STI rear sight - it's 0.360 vs 0.260 (which I corrected in the post), so that makes more sense. I will check out the sight options you mentioned. This is all really good info for folks looking for night sights for an Escort!
