No. I have not heard a single instance of external extractor problems in early model 1911SC/PD's outside of Hilton Yam's article. I have 3 of these early guns and they have been problem free.

I have an earlier SW1911. Seems to work fine normally as long as I don't install a buffer. It don't always extract with the magazine removed, but since it's not usually used that way, it doesn't matter.
I have an original 1911SC and I've never had an extractor problem (or any other problem for that matter).
S&W was doing external extractors in semi-autos for many years before they started making 1911s. If anyone knows how to do it right, it would be S&W. I can't understand why Hilton Yam would have predicted problems.

On a good day, can hit the broad side of a barn ... from the inside
He went through a long treatise on extractor alignment.
He might have something, for all their expertise with external extractors, S&W decided to change the design on the E, Pro, and CS 1911oids.
