    1913 gov. model

Been around these weapons nearly all my life, but it seems the more I learn the more I realize how little I really know!
That being said, I recently came into possession of this early gov model (1913 I believe). This is my first civilian 1911 and my earliest.
This particular piece is well worn and appears to be mostly original from what I can deduce. The small parts (hammer, thumb safety, slide stop ect.) all retain at least some of the original cobalt fire blue color. Stocks are in great shape with no cracks. Frame retains 60% +/- original finish but the slide finish is nearly gone except in certain protected areas. The barrel is in great shape but I need help here to determine the originality or lack thereof. There is a small san serif "P" on the top rear. Nothing on either side of the lugs and there is an "N" on the bottom of the barrel in front of the lug. The wear on the mag matches the wear on the pistol as well. It is two tone with a pinned base, is this correct? Any input is certainly appreciated/welcome.

Mr. Clawson's Commercial Series book shows examples of barrel marks from that era. He shows the N and P appear a little later than your serial but also says no set pattern. Is your barrel blue all over? I can't tell on my monitor.

Your rear sight seems flattened off.

That era pistol shipped with a looped magazine.

The barrel has 70-80% blueing +/-.....
The rear sight does have the appearance of filing but who knows? Not I.
The front sight was modified some with a file.

Is the top of the chamber blue or in the white?

Appears they also flattened off the top of the front sight along with filing the notch.

I meant the outside/top of the chamber. Original finish commercial barrels have the blue removed in this area.

Then I would say refinished. I find no examples of marks like yours on military barrels which were blued all over.

    I totally agree with you.
Nice pistol, but from the pictures it looked a bit messed about all over.
Originality can't be restored, so put "originality" at the top of a priority list. If JMB didn't put it on the 1911 you don't need it.
