Originality can't be restored, so put "originality" at the top of a priority list. If JMB didn't put it on the 1911 you don't need it.

This Sistema Colt and a Star Firestar .45 are my last .45 autoloading pistols, after having had a few over the years since 1971...but I recently found an old commercial Smith DA .45 ACP revolver from about 1920...waiting for the moon clips right now.
Between the Colt 1917 and the S&W 1917 or commercial equivalents, I've always preferred the S&W for the grip. It just fits my hand better although I do fine with the Colt. Both are quality revolvers.
IF your new S&W has chambers with a shelf (and it should) to prevent the cartridge from going all the way through, you can shoot it. You just have to use a pencil or something similar to push each empty case from the cylinder.
It does have the stepped chambers...and it is in almost great condition, except where it looks like somebody used it for a hammer...Original grips, light holster wear and locks up like new.
I was picking up a gun I bought online at the FFL - a 1916 Colt Police Positive - and the sales guy told me I should look at this old Smith...bought it immediately. I have had a Colt 1917, too, and it looks really menacing, but I found it hard to load even with moon clips...
The Smith is my preference, too. Colt revolvers are just a passing phase for me.
