    Considering a STI 1911 .40 cal

    Good day all,
Just returned from the local gun store after spending some time handeling the Escort in .40 cal. Oddly, the STI web site only shows a 9mm & .45 cal for that model???

I like the size and feel and due to the amount of .40 cal ammo I have, am not considering the .45 cal at this time. I have seen some posts out there about .40 cal ammo and its generated HP and accelerated wear on a handgun. Any issues with the .40 cal? Not to get too bouncy here, but I haven't seen any reviews on the Escort in .40 cal.
    I'm wondering:
    • how it is with various loads, especially Self defense loads.
    • Does STI recommend or caution against specific loads, ammo?
    • is a P+ load allowed?
    • Don't like the sights, are they replaceable? Any one do this, recommends? I'm slightly nigh sight compromised and need a little extra help at night.
    • warranty statement says there is no warranty, so input on warranty related issues. Is company responsive?

A local gun store has it 4sale NIB for $1029. It's very tempting.
    I currently carry a Kahr P9 9mm for reference.

Thanks in in advance for any and all input.

    Be be safe out there.
    Eric

    Hello.
Although I can't find any published data, I would caution the use of .40 cal +P loads in an aluminum framed compact. The .40 is plenty hot as it is and using personal defense hollow points usually work best at a specific FPS.....I honestly don't see what you would gain.
My every day carry is a TALO Night Defender in .45 ACP....the pistol has like specs to your STI but with Novak sights...It's a Colt and can be had for less than $1029 too. Would you consider a Colt Defender in 9MM ?

There is no standard for .40 +P, it is just whatever the maker thinks the guns will stand. Or whatever he thinks you will buy if you think it is more powerful.

As mentioned, I currently carry a Kahr P9 9mm, wanting to up the caliber, here in the PNW, coats get thick in the winter and I want to feel confident. The local PD and State Patrol are switching to .40 or .45 from the 9mm. Another reason, I have about 3000 rounds of .40 cal, so don't want to start over stocking another caliber round.

    Appreciate te your input.

In case anyone happens to follow this thread, I did purchase the STI 1911 Escort. I love how it feels and shoots. It actually make me a better shot on accuracy.
About the gun. I have experienced since first time out a few issues, and hope their resolved shortly. I have 500+ rounds thru it now.

    1) one magazine was causing stove pipping of rounds. Ordered new magazine. Other 3 are just fine.
    2) the slide will often not completely close after ejecting a round. A slight nudge with my thumb completes the cycle.
    3) often, the slide lock will engage after ejecting a round. (yes I've checked my grip, etc) confirmed by gun shop that sold me the gun.

The gun is in the shop currently while I am out of town being repaired.
These issues in no way changes my opinion or satisfaction with the gun.

Had a Tricon night site installed and the fwd site slot was wacked, gun shop had to do some minor machining to get to fit properly.

After I get the hand gun back, I'll post some stats on ammo used, grouping etc.

    Stay safe.
    Eric
