Black oxide is simply gun blueing.
Judging by AO's pricing, the Parkerizing is the more expensive finish by about $50 or so.
The Tufftride/Tennifer/Melonite process is described in this booklet by H.E.F. Durferrit.
A black oxide layer is produced as part of the Tufftride/Tennifer/Melonite process. The TUFFTRIDE QPQ process is known in English-speaking and Asian countries under that name, in Europe and German-speaking countries as TENIFER QPQ and in the USA as MELONITE QPQ. TUFFTRIDEŽ, TENIFERŽ and MELONITEŽ are registered trademarks of Durferrit GmbH.
Another company booklet provides more detail about the black oxide layer and the outer compound layer of the nitrocarburized layer.A specially developed cooling bath (AB 1 bath) is used for carrying out the oxidative treatment after salt bath nitrocarburizing. During this treatment a black iron oxide layer (magnetite) is produced on the surface of the treated parts, which greatly enhances the corrosion resistance.
The compound layer divides in a compact part and a porous part which is situated directly at the surface. The latter is also called pore zone. It is used as lubricant reservoir and supports the good dry-running operation properties of the treated parts. During oxidizing cooling the pores are almost filled with magnetite, which anchors optimal the protecting oxide layer.
"Black iron oxide", eh? It sure sounds a lot better than 'black rust'...
Too many people miss the silver lining because they're expecting gold.
