    First 1911

Today, I traded my Glock 17 in for my first 1911. It's a Taurus PT. I am new to .45's especially 1911's. I am prior U.S. Army so I only have used 9mm over seas. So I need some advice on what it is useful in, what accessories go well with it? Competition? Self Defense? Any help is useful.

Welcome to the forum & to the world of 1911's. Have you had it out to the range yet?

As far as parts/mods, as long as the pistol runs reliably, a lot comes down to personal preference (grips, arched vs flat main spring housing, etc) & intended use. Are you thinking of using this for a carry pistol or shooting competitions or just something for stress relief at the range?

You've come to a great place to learn about the 1911 - plenty of folks on here willing to help & who have forgotten more about the 1911 than I'll probably ever know.

I own a Taurus PT1911 and really enjoy shooting it. It is a fine pistol with many features that other manufacturers charge extra for. It is incredibly accurate right out of the box and reliable also. A number of my friends and shooters at the range have PT1911s as well and feel the same way as I do. Early models had an issue with the right side ambi-safety coming loose but Taurus seems to have corrected that issue with later manufacturing runs. The only mods I have made to mine has been adding a fiber optic front sight and GI guide rod and plug to make it easier to field strip. I have well over 3500 rounds through the pipe without any problems. It shoots everything I feed it.

I work for the USAF and tease the Security Forces commander often. He likes to tell his troops “two in the chest and one in the head” I tell him if he had a .45 one in the chest would be sufficient.
