    1911pd mainspring housing and beavertail

I am trying to figure out the original configuration of 1911pd commander, with the scandium frame. Was the mainspring housing steel, aluminum, or plastic? Also what is the beaver tail made of?

If you have an original 1911pd commander please check those two parts with a magnet and let me know if it sticks. Thanks, Ed.

I had one of the first SC1911s S&W shipped. I believe the MSH was stainless steel; the checkering was so aggressive you could grate coconuts with it. I immediately swapped it out, then swapped it back when I sold it. Got tired of fiddling with the "Swartz-type" firing pin safety. Never was sure it would go "BANG" instead of "click."

    Sw1911pd Commander

The mainspring housing and beavertail on mine is definitely steel.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up installing a Wilson Combat aluminum round but mainspring housing on mine. Seems funny all these guns shipped with steel maninspring housings, they clearly are supposed to have aluminum ones based on the weight listed on the spec sheet. I guess they use what ever they have handy..

I have an early 1911Sc that has a checkered Aluminum MSH that does take care of the dead skin on your hand. If it was more than a range toy I would change it out. I did put some Carbon fiber grips on mine.

eveled, does the corner of the frame have to be machined to install that Wilson part?
