    TRP For Home Defense?

My firearms experience to date has been a Ruger 10-22, HK93 A2, Winchester model 52. All of these I shot at the range, cleaned, lubed, and put away for next time.

Unfortunately my 1st experience with a handgun has been with the Remington R1 I bought for home defense a few months ago, along with Wilson mags and holster. The amount of time and work it needs to be even close to right is getting to be unacceptable.

I'd like to give the 1911 platform at least one more try since I've spent quite a bit on accessories and maintenance items. Otherwise I'll abandon the whole thing for the Ruger GP100 I wanted in the 1st place.

Will a Springfield TRP be a shoot/clean/lube gun like my others, or will I have to take it apart measure the components and start filing and replacing things?

I'm looking for a tool to do a job, not another hobby.

Other than the non-standard VIS on your R1 have you had any functional issues? If you are determined to purchase another 1911 I strongly suggest Colt or Ruger.

This is coming form a "Colt" guy, so take it FWIW.

I think the TRP would be an excellent choice. My personal preference in the Springfield line is the Range Officer. That being said, for purely home defense, the Mil Spec would offer a good, solid piece, and probably put you closer to the price point of your R1 (or a GP-100) While I have no experience with the Ruger SR1911, I don't think you could go wrong with one at all. Finally, I would have to offer the Colt O1991 if you're willing to pay a bit more.

    None @ 400 rounds.

First, what is unacceptable? In a latter comment you imply 400 rounds have been shot, but no indication of problems. What needs to be done to get it, as you say, close to right? ......Your TRP is a shoot and clean weapon just like any other. It only needs a simple fieldstrip to clean and lubricate and reassembly. It does not require a complete disassembly, measuring, filing, adjusting etc. after each use. ....There are a lot of 1911 owners who are a little on the obsessive side when it comes to their maintenance habits and this is not a bad thing, but, the so called preventive maintenance attitude can become detrimental over time through mistakes in reassembly and or incorrect/excessive adjustments. Enjoy your pistol and when something happens to it, send it back for repair. Just my $0.02

What, specifically, is the problem with the Remington R1?

That critical bit of information is missing.

It's not all R1's. It's a bad VIS on some of them. Here's the OP's original thread that led to the one we're on now. http://forum.m1911.org/showthread.ph...ton-R1-Mistake

I can recommend the TRP. I have one as a house gun. On range trips it has been outstanding and never faltered. I don't care much for the full length guide rod though.
