Springfield Armory .223 and .308 Conversions

Springfield was marketing these in the early '90s. Does anyone have any info on them or have one? They were a single shot, tilt barrel design I believe. I was wondering if it would be worth trying to find one. In particular I am concerned about frame damage issues with such cartridges.

    Thanks!

I remember those! They looked interesting, but they were forbidden in Greece, so I haven't tried one.

They were named the Springfield Arms Single Shot (SASS) & were available in several calibers, barrel lengths (10" & 14"), as well as with or without sights. The one pictured is a gunsmith build, all Springfield parts, but has a GI styled grip safety. A true SASS had a very nice looking BTGS.

I have the 44 Mag top end on it. I also have 7MM BR, 308, 358 tops for it.

As of a few years ago, Springfield had some repair parts & manuals available.
You just had to find someone who knew what you were asking for & where they were at.

I did not answer all your questions, but I have not seen any frame damage from the 44. The 7MMBR's recoil is stout, but nothing compared to the 308 & the 358 so I have only shot those to confirm that they work..

They do become availble on the several Auction Sites from timt to time. However some I have seen being offerred were missing the magazine/unlocking assembly. They are useless without it & I have never seen one offerred for sale. Also, the magazine assembly for the SASS is not exactly made to GI Magazine specs. One I have fits perfectly; the other is slightly oversize & binds the trigger

Thanks for the fast reply. That's a great picture. I will get in touch with Springfield next week to see what they have left. Perhaps I can put a kit together.

Steves pages has a PDF of the manual; it is a Springfield 1911A2.
