Hello all, I am purchasing my first Baer and on some of the guns I see that they have "NM Steel" Slides and Frames but on others it just just it has "NM" Slides and Frames. I dont know what "NM" means. It is relevant because I want Steel, not aluminum!!! Does the Premier II Super Tac have a "Steel" slide and Frame. I know Aluminum Frames make the guns lighter for carry but if I am spending over 2K, I just prefer steel. Thanks in advance.
I'm under the impression that NM, means National Match, but it could mean something else that pertains to the Les Baer guns.
NM does mean "National Match". In my limited understanding it pertains more to the tolerance of the parts and the fit than anything else. Typically, a "national match" frame and slide will have rails that are oversize enough that they can be fit by a gunsmith to something just short of an interference fit. Parts made to ordnance prints would need to be swaged, peened, welded or otherwise tightened in order to get the tight fit a match pistol requires. I've got a Concept I, which is about as basic a Les Baer pistol as one can buy, and even after 600 rounds there is no play whatsoever in the frame to slide fit. Or anywhere else for that matter. Actually, if you drop the slide from anything but full lock it won't necessarily go into battery. I think it has more to do with the barrel fit than the slide...
I know Les Baer has made aluminum framed pistols in the past, but I'm not sure they offer any currently. I'm pretty certain they would mention it on their website if a frame was anything but steel. The premier II supertac is listed as being made from steel...
Oliver, thanks for your informative reply. Here is why I questioned it. The description for the Super Tac says
"Baer NM steel frame, NM slide".
However, the description for the SRP for example says,
"Baer steel NM frame • Baer steel NM slide"
As you can see, the minor difference in the wording. Apparently I am reading too much into it. Thanks
Yeah, those descriptions were simply written on different days. They mean the same thing, as all Baer guns are built to NM specs.

There is no such thing as a National Match Specification, at least in terms of a particular set of blueprints, etc. It has become a generic term for high accuracy 1911 pistols. There have been many pistols marketed as NM pistols, which means in advertising terms, high accuracy.
