  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.

Why doesn't Kimber make a true Commander Size 1911?

Why can't Kimber make a true commander size gun with a 4.25" regular barrel with bushing with no full length guide rod? That bull barrel they use on the Pros and Ultras make them muzzle heavy. The balance is all wrong. If they made a commander size 1911 with the features mentioned above and no Swartz safety, I'd buy one in a heartbeat especially if it had an alloy frame. I just got a SW1911 Compact ES and it's great. 4.25" barrel with bushing and no FLGR with an officer size alloy frame. It's awesome.

Might should call them and suggest it to them. Maybe even have them put some silly wild horse emblem on the side too while they are at it, make it looook puuurty.

No real idea why they don't. Perhaps just they want to be diffrent, but that is just me guessing.

enjoy your smith.

There is always Colt, they invented the Commander and build a fine pistol.

They probably think the 4" bull barrel is better. Personally I like the idea of a true commander slide & barrel bushing, although i've never owned either kind. I currently have a Kimber Ultra Carry II and a Custom II, I don't much care for the reverse bushing but I hardly ever shoot the Ultra II, I put about 800 rounds though it at first to ensure it was reliable and now I put 50-100 through it every couple months just for the heck of it.

What a great question. I have a Kimber Pro Crimson Carry and it would be a better design if it were a true Commander and delete that crazy paper clip take down tool.

I have a Kimber Pro Crimson Carry and a Dan Wesson VBOB and when I hold together them for balance purposes you can see that the Kimber really is front heavy. The VBOB is perfectly balanced. I'm not critizing Kimber at all, it's my first 1911 and I'll never get rid of it because it's a fabulous gun.

I don't know about steel frame guns but when you hold an alloy frame Kimber Pro next to an alloy frame commander with a standard barrel/bushing like the S&W commander size guns, the Kimber is muzzle heavy. The ballance is off to me. I held Kimber's new Super Carry Pro next to my S&W1911 Compact ES. I have a SIS Custom that feels and balances great. When I pick up the SIS Pro, it just feels wrong and there's only 3oz. Difference in the weight. That bull barrel is heavy.

The Pro CDP is a great gun with an aluminum alloy frame and a bull barrel, just like my Pro Crimson carry so it has to be muzzle heavy.
I can only speak about my personal experience but, IMO the Pro version is muzzle heavy.

Maybe they wanted the weight forward to offset muzzle jump? I haven't fired any short-barrel 1911's from other manufacturers but I think my Ultra Raptor is a lot more controllable than I anticipated.
