  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.

Adjustable Rear Sight Problem

I purchased a 1445 LDA Limited brand new in 2004 and twice have had problems with the rear adjustable sight not holding windage. I had Para replace the sight the first time it happened, but after the replacement failed, I have decided to go with a Bo-Mar BMCS-LP. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Also, was my choice going with the Bo-Mar sight a good one? Are there better sights I could have used that would not require gunsmithing (the BMCS-LP is designed to be a factory replacement)?

Other than the above problem I am very pleased with the gun. Its very accurate (when the windage is not acting-up) and reliable. All-n-all an easy shooter.

How was the Para sight not holding windage? Was the sight itself going out of adjustment, or was the sight loose in the dovetail and sliding sideways in the slide?

I think I would have worked a little harder at keeping the OEM sight in place before bailing out and replacing it, but is long as the Bomar you're getting doesn't require a proprietary cut in the slide you should be okay. If you don't like the Bomar, you can always go back to the OEM and glue it in with some purple LocTite.

The sight itself was going out of adjustment. The sight was not loose in the dovetail.

What would happen was this: I would initially be able to adjust the sight for proper windage. After about 50 or so rounds (standard factory loadings) I would notice that the blade has started to creep away from its initial position. I would be able to re-adjust, but after a box or 2 of rounds, the blade would creep away again.

The Bo-Mar sight does not require any alteration of the slide. If the part was more expensive, I probably would have persued another replacement from Para, but I just didn't feel like screwing around. I just want to be able to shoot my gun (without having to constantly re-adjust windage)!

Bo-Mar is a well built sight using high grade materials. I think a lot of the Bo-Mar look-a-likes use inferior parts and the design is modified enough to not tread on any patent rights, but a different design does not always mean equal durability. Bo-Mar does not need a set screw to hold the elevation adjustment, but the knock offs on Kimbers do require a set screw.
