Another cracked Kimber aluminum frame

Strange coincidence....

I read the post last night regarding the Ultra Carry with the cracked frame. First time I had checked into the forum since the beginning of October.

I had my Pro Carry at the range yesterday. Fired 200 rounds of 230 grain Remington FMJ. I normally clean my pistols promptly after each range visit but didn't yesterday. Just finished cleaning it a while ago. Guess what I spotted.....

About a quarter inch ahead of the slide stop hole, right at the end of the rail the slide runs on, cracked, both sides about 1/8 to 1/4 inch down into the frame. Almost exactly what was described in the previous thread I read last night except this is a Pro Carry.

I bought it new last October 29th and have since put 2k to 3k through it....always factory loads, all 230 grain fmj except for about 150 Federal jhp that I ran through it to test it out for carry.

Very disappointing, just a touch less than a year old. If it were just my pistol I might write it off as a fluke, but now having read others are experiencing the same problem and I'm a feeling snakebit.

I've got a stainless Ultra and I checked that one immediately after finding the crack on the Pro Carry. No cracks on that frame. Makes me wonder how some pistol's frames fail and others don't. Also makes me wonder about the overall longevity of both of them.

I'm in the market for a new pistol. I think I'll stick to strictly steel frames from here on out, as well as looking at some other makes. A couple of ounces doesn't really matter much if the gun can't stay together for one full year and a couple thousand rounds...especially for a carry piece.

I hear ya, I have thought about calling Kimber and asking them to put a steel frame on mine. The only one I see is the SIS for an Officers size steel frame.

Yeah, on the Ultra Carry there is no option for a stainless frame. There is for the Pro Carry and I might do exactly what you mentioned if the folks at Kimber are amenable. I can understand that one wouldn't consider an aluminum framed pistol as a range gun, but competence does require practice and if an owner is concerned about cracking the frame that's not gonna happen much.

Question for ya....did Kimber ask you to ship the entire piece or just the frame?

Sorry to hear that!

I'm sure they;ll make it right.

So far, my Ultra CDP's fine. Had a stainless Pro that I just sold to a friend; no frame troubles at all. The Custom CDP's alloy frame is still OK too.

I've also got 1911's from S&W and Colt with alloy frames. The only steel framed 1911 I've got is a six year old Kimber TLE.

I guess I've been lucky.

Take care,

Rick

I have the CDP II and a S&W sc and they both are just fine. I have about 6,000 plus rounds through the Smith and about 2,000rds through the Kimber.

The exact reason I went with the Eclipse Ultra II. I just don't trust aluminum to stand up to the hammering in such a small pistol.

Send it to Kimber, they should fix it for you (replace the frame).

I have a few questions about replacing frame.
With a new frame comes a new Serial Number. Does the owner have to do any new paperwork?
Can Kimber duplicate the Serial Number on a replacement frame when they destroy the original?

I had to send a FFL, new frame is new number.

You send the pistol complete, you do want them to be sure of the fit. I am also getting the night sights installed while there.
