  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.

9mm & 38 Super Magazines

Can anyone tell me if 9mm will feed/fire from a .38 Super magazine and vice versa? i.e., will .38 Super feed/fire from a 9mm magazine, assuming in both cases you have the appropriate barrel installed in your 1911. I just bought a like new Custom Commander that comes with both 9mm & 38 Super barrels and all the extras. Its in transit right now. I just wanted to pick up some extra magazines and wasn't sure if I needed to buy caliber specific magazines or not. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If your 9mm mags have a spacer in the back of the channel, it's unlikely that .38 super ammo will fit. As far as shooting 9mm's out of your .38 super magazines, you'll have to try it and see. It works out fine in some guns, but not others.

the 9mm mag will have the spacer to keep the round from moving around..Sprinfield designed a new style where the spacer is placed in front..that way the bullet is held longer in the feed cycle and doesn;t get released too early and cause a jam..

38 super mags do not have the spacer as teh OAL of the round is longer than the 9mm..

you will probably have to weight and till you get your gu up and running to test out the 9mm in 38 super mags..if that doesn't work you will have to go with running caliber specific magazines for your dual setup..

In my springfield 9mm WalMart valuepak ammo will feed from my 38 super mags..with no problems...

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I'll have to wait and see if this is going to work. I think I'll pick up a couple of each anyway. Can't have too many magazines! When I get it up and running I'll let you know how it worked out. Take care.

Hmmm, and I was wondering why Alan Tillman send me one 38 mag together with the 5 9mm ones, when he send me my 9mm Para 1911.

At that time, I thought it was a mistake. Now I have to wait for the Olympics to end, to see if the .38 mag feeds 9mm. Nice idea!

Thanks
