There are two major type of gas, used in Airsoft pistol. The first is what is generally known as "Green Gas". The second is known as HFC 134A.

What is important to know, is that each pistol is designed to take either of these gases. Usually Japanese pistols use the HFC 134A gas, which is also the less powerful one. Taiwanese pistols (and some others) are designed to accept the more powerful Green Gas.

Using Green Gas in your Japanese Airsoft pistol is not advisable, in the long run you will eventually destroy your pistol. The additional power offered by the Green Gas, will eventually wear out parts of your pistol. However, there are upgrades that you can perform to your Japanese shooter, to make it compatible with Green Gas.

One more thing, Green Gas is in reality nothing else but propane, with some silicone oil added into it, to lubricate the internals of your gun. People have discovered that, and started wondering why they have to pay the premium price of Green Gas, when it's just propane. So eventually, they came up with adapters, which allow you to use the standard propane cartridges sold for barbeqeues or torches, to fill up your Green Gas compatible pistols, using the very cheap propane, instead of Green Gas.

You can find those adapters in Airsoft Innovations site. The same site offers you some flow restrictors, which allow you to use Green Gas (or eventually propane), in your Western Arms pistols.

And of course, since upgrades exist to use your Japanese guns with Green Gas, you may obviously use your Japanese-upgraded guns with propane, which is the most financially sound solution, given the cost of HFC 134A, Green Gas and propane.

Don't forget about Red Gas. From what I read this gas has even more possibly twice the pressure of Green Gas. From what I understand it's commonly used in cold weather. Other than that I don't know too much about Red Gas.

You really dont use red gas unless your trying to kill someone

Red Gas doesn't have any silicon in the mixture either, and is EXTREMELY dehydrating for your gun, in terms of lubrication. After using a few mags with red gas, the inside of the gun is as dry as a stale potato chip.

I've even heard of black gas, which is supposed to have like 3 times the power of green gas and then some. I can only imagine the M/Sec and velocity on that.

red gas has silicon in it, as with green and hfc-134

black gas is CO2
