Question about a Colt 1903
I know squat about this gun and I want some of the expert to educate me on this particular gun. I went looking around at pawn shops today and saw a Colt 1903. It looked to be SS but not sure if that was available back on the days. I had some minor rust spots, but nothing that can't be fixed. I know it works because the owner was selling it to that pawn shop (which has a shooting range) and they just tested it. I handle it briefly since I was just window shopping and I wanted to do some home work. I didn't catch the caliber but I know it wasn't a .45. I wanted to know what is the possible value of this gun? It pretty much looked just like this one .

Good evening to ya Mr X,
I don't claim to be an expert on anything, but I do own one of these little sweethearts. The Colt 1903 came in 4 types, which have to do with running changes in production for the over 45+ years they were manufactured. Early type had a bushing for the barrel like a 1911; the barrels got shorter, etc. There are sites on the web that will link the Serial # to production date and type. They came in two calibers, 32acp and 380acp. Magazine holds 7. They were blued and nickle plated (no stainless). Has a grip safety; and a manual safety that locks the slide and trigger. Gunbroker has had prices from $290 for some "as is", rough ones; $900 & up for the militarys; and over that for factory engraved models with pearl and ivory grips. Colt called it the pocket pistol (they must have had bigger pockets back then). It is a thin pistol with an inclosed hammer. Mine looks just like your picture, is a 32acp, and was made in 1923. The craftsmanship is excellent. I have never had it fail to operate and it's very accurate. Even with the really small sights, it will put a full magazine in a 1 1/2" group at 15 yards. Great little pistol. Enough of them out there so you can still find used parts if needed. The only thing I would add is that quality extra mags are kinda hard to come by. The aftermarket ones just don't seam to work, and you will pay top dollar for an old factory model ($65+). My $0.02, OkR |

Here is a good link. Use the "quick search" function at the top of the page to locate the 1903 pages...http://www.coltautos.com/

Too late. Call them yesterday to see what it was. They sold it already but it was a .38 pocket model. It sold for $500. I was planning on getting it today
