Please note that the forums in this category are to be used to ask questions or to show us pistols from these manufacturers. They can also be used to ask questions about the parts of a particular pistol from one of these manufacturers, as long as the question relates to the original parts.

  • If your pistol malfunctions and you want to ask for help on how to troubleshoot it, post your question in the "Gunsmithing and Refinishing" forum, not in this one.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market parts, these questions should go in the "Parts - Grips" forum, not in the manufacturers forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about after-market magazines, these questions should go in the "Magazines" forum, not in these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about holsters, those questions should go in the "Holsters" forum, not in these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about conversion kits, those questions should go in the "Conversion Kits" forum, not these forums.
  • If you want to ask questions about which ammo to use with your pistol, those questions should be posted in the "Ammo" forum, not these forums.

Messages with questions for after-market parts, magazines, holsters, conversion kits, ammo etc. will be moved to the proper forum and a warning will be issued.

IMPORTANT: In Photo-threads, each post should contain at least one picture of your own. Quoting a previous post, does not make your post compliant with that requirement. Photo threads are NOT for chatting.

Slide Stop Notch

I've been eyeing an older Combat Government Model for a while. I've been wanting one for a while but they seem far and in between. It appears to be a nice pistol with the exception of the slide stop notch being filed open. It seems to be enlarged ~ 30% more than stock. Now I have heard of filing the slide stop itself, but never the slide to ensure slide lock after the last round. Sure would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this. I've also heard that repairing/replacing the material by welding will just make things worse by possibly distorting the slide and making it easier to start cracking in that location? Thoughts? Buy or let it slide.... or do I do that Zen thing and wait for another!?

Unless you can check it out

I'd pass. Gunsamerica had a great govn't; seller said slide stop notch was "machined" in order to work. Closeup pic looked OK, but .... I passed.

The modified slide would put me off. If it doesn't bother you then that's a different matter.
Since it's already had metal removed, you'd probably spend more to correct it than another gun that wasn't butchered would cost you. Putting metal back on isn't easy.
I'd wait.

The 1911 platform, functions excellently the way it was designed. I've got 7, including 4 Colts which include a USGI from 1918. They're ALL 100% functionally. I'd WAIT. I don't like the looks of that notch on your photo. Sorry, but it just doesn't look "right" to me. I've hung around here for about three years, and this is the first I've heard of that...

I know it's hard to resist one you like. But, this one, I don't like. I personally feel you can find others that haven't been modified like this, that in the end you'd be happier with. It's up to you, sir. But that's what I personally suggest.

Thanks to all for your replies. I feel the same way, I know it is not right, but it is a pistol I'd like to have. I guess I was hoping someone might have come back with a no problem to fix. But deep down I know it is just trouble. Thanks for keeping me straight. Maybe another will come along.

You Deserve Better

That slide was freehanded with a draw file. Save your hard-earned for a better example of the breed. It'll unquestionably be worth the wait.

one more thought

you might consider is: Was the 'fixing' of the notch actually solving another problem? Good idea to wait. Tough, but - the Zen thing works.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Pass on it, you can do better with your eyes closed but keep them open just in case.
