Messages with questions for after-market parts, magazines, holsters, conversion kits, ammo etc. will be moved to the proper forum and a warning will be issued. Slide Stop Notch
I've been eyeing an older Combat Government Model for a while. I've been wanting one for a while but they seem far and in between. It appears to be a nice pistol with the exception of the slide stop notch being filed open. It seems to be enlarged ~ 30% more than stock. Now I have heard of filing the slide stop itself, but never the slide to ensure slide lock after the last round. Sure would appreciate hearing your thoughts on this. I've also heard that repairing/replacing the material by welding will just make things worse by possibly distorting the slide and making it easier to start cracking in that location? Thoughts? Buy or let it slide.... or do I do that Zen thing and wait for another!?

Tommy... I agree with Joni and mon

The 1911 platform, functions excellently the way it was designed. I've got 7, including 4 Colts which include a USGI from 1918. They're ALL 100% functionally. I'd WAIT. I don't like the looks of that notch on your photo. Sorry, but it just doesn't look "right" to me. I've hung around here for about three years, and this is the first I've heard of that... I know it's hard to resist one you like. But, this one, I don't like. I personally feel you can find others that haven't been modified like this, that in the end you'd be happier with. It's up to you, sir. But that's what I personally suggest. Mick

Thanks to all for your replies. I feel the same way, I know it is not right, but it is a pistol I'd like to have. I guess I was hoping someone might have come back with a no problem to fix. But deep down I know it is just trouble. Thanks for keeping me straight. Maybe another will come along.

You Deserve Better
That slide was freehanded with a draw file. Save your hard-earned for a better example of the breed. It'll unquestionably be worth the wait.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Pass on it, you can do better with your eyes closed but keep them open just in case.
