I'm looking for some thoughts on useing 160gr cast in .45acp. Powders on hand are Win 231 and Bullseye. Is any one useing this bullet with one ether powder? If so what works for you, and did you need to use a lighter recoil spring?

I'm using the 152 and 155 both with all stock springs in my Kimber 5". Actually my best performing bullet of any is the 155. I still shoot all the way up to 200, however. Depends on the course of fire. I have 160s on order.

Penn Bullets includes load data with their 152. WW231 min of 7.1 grs @ 1040 fps and max of 7.7 grs @ 1144 fps. With Bullseye they report a min of 6.2 grs @ 1051 fps and a max of 6.7 grs @ 1164 fps. I have not tried either of these.

They also list loads for the 152 using Trap 100, 700x, Unique, AA #2, AA#5 and Win WST. I haven't tried any of these powders either.

My load runs about 1050 fps and easily cycles the gun. Feels like a light load recoil wise.

I am looking at getting the LEE 160rf mold. Wasn't sure if I would need lighter springs, and if accuracy was any good.

I have used a 175gr swc and got 1020fps with 6.7gr of WW 231. The bullet is basically an H&G #68 with a shortened base. Accuracy was not as good as the 200gr swc. I have experimented with many bullet designs and found the #68 200gr swc to be best all around choice, as long as the pistol will feed it. Problem guns will either need the attention of a gunsmith or RN ammo.

Your right I do get my best with a 200swc, I'm using the RCBS mould.
Loading it with 5.5 of Win 231.
With the 160 I'm looking for a load that has very little recoil.
The near by range has started a new game, some what like the Steel challenge. All autos shoot in the same class, so to compete with the 9mm boys I need to cut my loads down a bit. 8" disks out to 25 yards.

I would go with 5.0 of 231 and the 200gr bullet. This will give you about 800fps with very little recoil. Be careful, you mught need to use a lower powered recoil spring for 100% reliability.
